Calming Reactive Skin Before a Treatment: My 7-Day Reset
Firdos Khairunnessa · 4 min read
A short, practical reset I have prescribed hundreds of times. It works.
Why this matters
A stressed skin barrier responds badly to any active treatment — lasers feel hotter, hydro facials sting, peels over-react, and recovery takes twice as long. I would rather postpone a session by a week and run the protocol below than treat a sensitised face and chase complications afterwards. Most clients see a visible calming within four to five days.
Day 1 to 7: what to stop
Stop all actives. That means retinoids, vitamin C, exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic, mandelic), enzyme masks, and any 'brightening' serum with niacinamide over five percent. Stop physical exfoliants entirely. Stop any DIY mask you have seen on TikTok.
Stop the hot water. Lukewarm only — face, shower, and especially the steam of a long bath. Heat dilates capillaries and provokes a sensitised barrier.
Stop the device. No cleansing brushes, no LED at home, no Gua sha on inflamed tissue.
Day 1 to 7: what to use
A gentle, fragrance-free cream cleanser, morning and evening. Lukewarm water, hands not flannels, pat dry. A bland, ceramide-rich moisturiser twice a day — the unsexy ones in tubs from your pharmacy are perfect. A hydrating, panthenol-based serum (Bepanthen Derma, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast, Avene Cicalfate work well in our climate) on any reactive patches. Mineral SPF in the morning, applied gently. That is the entire routine.
Sleep, water, and the thing nobody wants to hear
Seven to eight hours of sleep changes how skin looks in a week. Two litres of water a day. And alcohol — the honest truth is that even one or two glasses of wine in the 48 hours before a sensitive treatment shows up on your skin. I am not asking you to be a monk; I am asking you to notice the pattern. Your skin will tell you.
Day 6 and 7: the final check
By day six your skin should look noticeably calmer — less reactive flush, smoother to touch, fewer reactive spots. If it does not, that is useful information; we may be looking at rosacea, perioral dermatitis or a contact reaction, and we will pivot the consultation accordingly.
Why we ask
When you arrive with a calm, hydrated barrier we can do more in one session and you recover faster. The result is almost always visibly better than treating a sensitised face would have been. A week of plain skincare is the cheapest performance enhancer in aesthetics.
